Susan Horkan
Susan Horkan brings to Carriage House Violins a rare dedication to understanding musicians’ needs honed during seven years at Reuning & Son Violins and ten years at Johnson String Instrument in Newton, Massachusetts.
As a champion of contemporary master makers, Susan can offer her clients a first-class selection of instruments of exceptional value. She has traveled extensively to familiarize herself with the finest modern instruments at competitions and exhibitions in the United States, London, Paris, and Cremona. She found that today’s makers thrive in an atmosphere of collaboration that lifts the overall quality to heights not seen previously. She found an opportunity to collaborate closely with one particular maker when she married Benjamin Ruth.
Susan began playing violin at age 8. In 1994, she graduated from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst with a degree in vocal performance and business. Her personal music making swings between classical playing and bluegrass fiddling, and she enjoys singing folk music and madrigals.
