Piano Trios (parts and piano score) by Franz Schubert

Edited by Eva Badura-Skoda. Published by Henle

Franz Schubert (1797-1828) was an Austrian composer of the Romantic Era and generally considered one of the greatest composers in the history of Western classical music. Despite his early death at age 31, he was remarkably prolific, leaving behind a vast oeuvre of over 1500 compositions, with over 600 art songs at its center. He left his mark on all genres, including--most consequentially for string players--on chamber music. His individual style grew out of the influences of Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven and was characterized by a mastery of melodic writing as well as formal experimentation and significant harmonic innovation.

Schubert's two mature piano trios are some of the grandest in the repertory and are among his very best works. No. 1 in B-flat Major, Op.99 (D.8981 1827) is exuberant and joyful, leading Schumann to write about it: '' …the troubles of our human existence disappear and all the world is fresh and bright again.'' It runs at an extraordinary length of 40 minutes, though No. 2 in E-flat Major, Op.100 (D.929, 1828) is even longer at 50 minutes. No. 2 was a favorite of Schubert's and one of his few large-scale chamber works he heard in his lifetime. This comprehensive Henle urtext collection of his piano trios also contains his early effort in the genre Sonatensatz (Sonata Movement) in B-flat Major, D.28 and his Nocturne (Notturno) in E-flat Major, Op.148 (D.897), an aborted adagio reworked into a stand-alone piece. Contains parts and piano score. Ranges from advanced to master level, Grades 5-6.
