String Quartets, Vol. 3: ''Haydn Quartets'' (parts) by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

Urtext edition by Wolf-Dieter Seiffert. Published by Henle

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) was one of the most prominent composers of the Classical period and is often considered one of the greatest composers of Western art music. A noted child prodigy, he excelled in all genres. His music is revered for its beauty, clarity, balance, and transparency, underpinned by sophisticated craftsmanship.

Mozart excelled in all chamber forms, including the string quartet. Some of his best entries in the genre are in the set of six ''Haydn'' quartets written between 1782 and 1785, written in esteem and honor of Franz Joseph Haydn, the ''father'' of the string quartet and Mozart's friend and quartet partner. Upon hearing these quartets performed, Haydn remarked to Mozart's father Leopold: ''Before God, and as an honest man, I tell you that your son is the greatest composer known to me either in person or by name. He has taste, and, what is more, the most profound knowledge of composition." Indeed, these are some of Mozart's richest compositions, with a wide emotional range, thematic invention, and tonal experimentation. Parts only. Advanced level, Grade 5.
